Some Technical Feats and Interesting Facts about Usha Martin

  • Usha Martin’s Steel Plant was one of the pioneer in the world to use hot metal in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for making speciality steel. Before this innovation the practice prevalent in the industry was to use only Scrap for Steel making in EAF. Usha Martin challenged this convention and successfully used hot metal from Blast Furnace in the EAF and standardized this practice. Subsequently, this has become a widespread practice in Steel industry and Usha Martin is proud to be the pioneer in this technology transformation in the industry.


  • Usha Martin’s Steel division was the first successful user of Directly Reduced Iron (DRI, also known as Sponge Iron) in steel making in India. DRI production is an appropriate technical solution for iron making in countries having limited reserves of coking coal. This enables optimum utilization of locally available natural resources.


  • The world’s largest coal producing company (CIL), preferred Usha Martin’s wire-ropes to start its operations


  • Usha Martin was the first company in India to set up inline patenting and galvanizing line for wires.

  • Usha Martin’s steel plant in India is the first to acquire ISO 9002 certification.


  • In 2001, Usha Martin’s steel plant became first Indian steel plan to receive TPM excellence award by Japanese Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM)
